The quick guide to the daily scrum meeting
The daily scrum inspects progress toward the sprint goal and adapts the sprint backlog accordingly — in fifteen minutes.
A daily scrum is meant to inspect progress toward the sprint goal and adapt the sprint backlog as needed. It is short by design: fifteen minutes, same time, same place, for the people doing the work.
What it is not
It is not a status report to the manager, and it is not a problem-solving session. Issues raised are noted and taken offline by the people concerned, otherwise the meeting expands to fill whatever time is available.
Making it useful
Focus on the sprint goal rather than on individual activity: what is blocking the goal, what changed since yesterday, what needs re-planning today. Teams that talk about the board rather than about themselves get more out of the same fifteen minutes.
A board everyone can see
The daily works best in front of a shared board. FoxPlan’s kanban shows tickets by status, by assignee or by swimlane, across a project or across the whole team — so the conversation happens over the same picture rather than over six different ones.
